Pre-Oscars talk

Rumour has it that anti-Israeli feeling may stop Waltz With Bashir from winning Best Foreign Film at the Oscars tonight. I really hope this isn’t true – mixing politics with awards shows is pretty stupid. In fact, I’d go one step further than that: mixing politics with film is fine on-screen but absolutely not behind the seens.
The big screen is for entertainment, not for political messages.
Have a speech ready, Kate, not a cry
Mira Sorvino has urged Kate Winslet to have a speech prepared or risk a repeat of her Baftas blubbathon, according to the BBC Entertainnment Twitter feed. This also adds to speculation that Winslet is almost certain to win the Best Actress gong.
Spirits win for Rouke
Mickey Rouke last night won a best actor award at the 2009 Film Independent Spirit Awards, dropped some serious F-bombs and dedicated his win to his recently deceased Chihuahua Loki. It could be a good omen for his chances tonight, although support for Sean Penn’s portrayl of Harvey Milk has been growing.
‘Professional gatecrasher’ advises Oscars security staff
Self-proclaimed ‘professional gatecrasher’ Scott Weiss has been hired by Oscars bosses to advise security on how to spot anyone trying to gain illegal entry to parties. Weiss himself crashed the Oscars last year and had previously snuck into the Grammys and the Emmys amongst other award shows. His exploits were recorded in the documentary The Crasher.
Apparently there’s been some ‘sliming’ going on behind the scenes to try and ruin Slumdog Millionaire’s too: http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/film/oscars/article5780288.ece

What statement does it make about Hollywood when the American Best Film is from India? What will India’s best film be? Is Hollywood so desperate for cash that they would waste this time to honor whom ever to promote work that has little American broad appeal. Oops, I guess they did. Slum Dog won 6 Oscars. One thing about Hollywood is they always repeat their mistakes. Money is all that matters.

No, it didn’t. They gave it to a Japanese production called Departures, which I haven’t seen and didn’t really create any buzz. Forces that be in Tinsel Town working behind the scenes?
Watch for my post on Mickey Rourke and Hollywood coming this week on this topic.

An cheers for the Times link, Steve. I’ve been looking for material on sliming without luck up until I properly read that.
